Celebration service for Jessie Joy Reese tonight at 6pm

The 12 year old Orange County seventh-grader, called “Jessie” by family and friends, lost her 10 month battle with cancer on January 5^th, 2012.

Jessie and her parents started The NEGU Foundation, a nonprofit organization to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, support sufferers and raise money for research. The foundation sold and provided thousands of “JoyJars” stuffed with candy and toys to sick children. More than 3,000 were sold and distributed in 27 states last year.

A celebration service is scheduled for tonight at 6pm inside Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, where Pastor Rick Warren will lead the memorial service.

If you can’t attend, please set aside a few minutes tonight to say a prayer for Jessie’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Memorial services for Pastor and Calvary Chapel Bible College teacher Bob Hoekstra are scheduled to take place at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa this Friday. Mr. Hoekstra, 71 had been suffering from poor health for more than two years before passing away on Dec. 20^th, 2011. Mr. Hoekstra led two ministries, Living in Christ Ministries and International Prison Ministry.

3 O.C. Post offices open Sunday

From Thanksgiving to Christmas, an estimated 16.5 billion letters, cards and packages will be processed and delivered. 's Santa!

Santa Claus is stateside at this very moment. He left the North pole in the capable hands of Mrs. Claus and the elves because he had to take care of some business. What's the deal with the army fatigues? He's on a mission, crossing the country and spreading Christmas cheer to our troops and their families at military bases and hospitals.

It's very important to him because...well, just imagine how you'd feel laid up in bed around the holidays. These wounded warriors who are looking for hope and some joy this season. Some of them unable to walk anymore. All because they love this country and made then ultimate sacrifice to keep us free.

America

’s Santa will make stops at medical hospitals including Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Loaded down with toys for the kids and gifts for our brave men and women in uniform. Santa wanted to make it a nationwide community event, so every year he counts on generous private donations. From celebrities to politicians, to people like you and me, Santa was not let down by the overwhelming support.

Don’t worry kids, America’s Santa will complete his voyage and return to the North Pole on December 20 to get ready for his Christmas Eve trip around the globe!

Angelus Temple & The Dream Center proudly present “THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS,” an original holiday production written and directed by Dana Morris. This Broadway-style musical centers around a family that runs a department store called “JayCee’s” set in downtown LA at Christmas time. It has over 100 in the cast and will feature an original script and songs as well as a dozen famous Christmas songs. There will be a live orchestra, elaborate sets and costumes, six screen multi-media, and it will actually snow this year in Angelus Temple! There is a Santa’s Toyland section, Nutcracker section, an outdoor Sleigh Ride/White Christmas section, as well as many other great songs that we know and love.

The show follows three generations of a family that have some unexpected things happen which help them realize that finding joy in our lives through the story of the baby Jesus is what the holidays are all about.

Family In Long Beach Needs Your Help

A family who just moved to Long Beach needs your help after their U-haul -- and all their possessions -- were stolen. Allen Bischofberger, his wife and their two children had just arrived at his brother's home in Long Beach after driving a U-Haul from Northern California. It was just after midnight Sunday, and the family decided to call it a night after the long trek. Just an hour later, Allen heard a commotion, and saw the truck speeding away. Film screening to benefit Costa Mesa's adoptive Marines

A documentary screening on Friday will benefit Costa Mesa's adoptive Marine unit where some say they need it most – their feet.

The city and the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines Support Group will present "Patrol Base Jaker" in a pre-release screening at 7 p.m. Friday at Triangle Square Cinemas. Proceeds benefit Socks for Heroes, a husband-and-wife San Clemente charity that sends inexpensive, cotton crew socks to Marine units in Afghanistan.

"Socks are a big problem for Marines ... they end up going through the worst conditions (and) what happens is their socks just become unusable in a hurry," said Jim Hogan, who operates the organization with his wife, Carla.

Socks for Heroes has shipped 25,000 pairs of socks to Afghanistan to the 1/5 Marines, which recently returned home. The charity now provides socks for the 2nd Battalion, Fourth Marines and has reached just under 5,000 pairs.

The Hogans began Socks For Heroes in May in memory of their son, Lance Corporal Donald J. Hogan. The 20-year-old Hogan was killed by an IED in Nawa, Afghanistan on Aug. 26, 2009. He died saving others in his patrol, Jim Hogan said.

The lance corporal was honored with the Navy Cross, which will be presented in January along with rest of the 1/5 Marines, based in Camp Pendelton.

"Patrol Base Jaker," dedicated to Donald Hogan, follows the unit on their 2009-10 deployment to Afghanistan, where in seven months the Marines turned the district from a Taliban-occupied area into a community by providing security, economic projects, getting people to participate in government, Jim Hogan said.

"What they accomplished in just seven months is really unheard of," he said.

Doors to the event open at 6 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m. After the screening, producer Dave Scantling and Colonel Robert Castellvi, who served as Chief of Staff for the 1st Marine Division at Camp Leatherneck, will discuss the film, which won "Best Documentary" at the GI Film Festival.

Tickets cost $20, or $25 to include popcorn and drink.

There will also be a screening on Oct. 30 in San Clemente at the San Clemente Community Center.

Too much Halloween candy can turn into a dental nightmare with the threat of tooth decay and cavities, but dentists across the nation are giving kids an incentive to donate their extra candy and help redistribute the candy for a good cause.

The Orthobee Team in Fountain Valley, with more than 30 other dental practices in Orange County, is working with Operation Gratitude, a non-profit group that sends more than 100,000 care packages to U.S. military soldiers overseas. Participating dentists are offering $1 for each pound of Halloween treats and will be donating them to Operation Gratitude.
"Halloween candy reminds the troops of home and the great traditions we celebrate at home, all of which they are protecting by serving in the military," said Carolyn Blashek, president and founder of Operation Gratitude, from the organization's Van Nuys headquarters.

Last year, close to 250,000 pounds of candy was collected through the candy buy-back program, and Orthobee collected 250 pounds from its Fountain Valley office alone.

The candy buy-back program was started in 2007 by Dr. Chris Kammer in Wisconsin, who was able to collect about 20,000 pounds in its first year. Last year, the number of participating dentists more than doubled to about 700, who contributed close to 125 tons of candy.

Dr. Chi Bui of the Orthobee Team is adding one more element to its program by matching dollar for dollar the amount of the buy-back and donating the amount to a local animal shelter.

Bui, an orthodontist, said giving back to her patients and the community was one of the main reasons her office decided to participate. It's also to help promote National Orthodontic Health Month, which is October, according to Sally Ly, the office assistant at Orthobee.

"Hard and sticky candy can break orthodontic appliances, chip teeth and cause dental caries (decay)," Bui said. "Allow your children to pick through the candy they want, then bag up the unwanted treats and drop them off at one of the participating offices."

The unwanted candy will be put to good use and donated to Operation Gratitude headquarters in Van Nuys, where it will be packed alongside deodorant, toothpaste, playing cards and other items to be sent to troops away from home. The troops often end up sharing the candy with local children where they are stationed, according to an Operation Gratitude representative.

"It means a whole lot. For some of these soldiers, these boxes might be the only boxes they get during their whole tour," said Rich Hernandez, director of administration and personnel at Operation Gratitude. "We want to make sure they know they're not forgotten."

More than 1,200 dental offices are participating in the candy buy-back program nationwide, including practices in Irvine, Huntington Beach, Brea and Anaheim. What Sherrie Gahn saw broke her heart. At Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas, 85% of the students are homeless. What really broke her heart was seeing some of them eating ketchup packets at lunch. At that point, I would say "How horrible! How can that happen? I hope someone does something about that." But not Sherrie. She committed herself to doing something for these students. Not only the students, but their families. She told the parents that she'd give them whatever they need. Food, clothes...She'd even pay their rent and utilities. All she asked in return was to keep their children at this school. She enlisted the help of volunteers and members of the community. She partnered with nonprofit organizations. All moving toward the goal of giving these kids and their families a better life.

Flash forward a little while later. Whitney Elementary School is now providing disadvantaged kids with items that range from free clothes to free haircuts, and operates a food bank that distributes food to students for the weekends. The school has even provides financial assistance to families with overdue bills. Because of this, one mom said that it made it possible for her family to have Christmas. Get this...since the program started, students have doubled their scores in reading proficiency. Sherry believes that this increase is not only a result of students' needs being met, but also because the school's support gives them hope for the future.

"They have food in their bellies that they would not have had, they have clothes on their back they wouldn't have had and for the first time someone believes in them. It's beyond food and clothing," she said.

But who exactly is Sherrie? Why is she doing all this?

Sherrie happens to be the new principal of Whitney Elementary School. And she has a passion for helping kids succeed.

She has so much passion that she promised them that if they graduate from high school and cannot afford college she will help pay their tuition. She believes that the kids are worth the big promise. She defines success as "the look in their face that I made their life better. That's my success rate when they hug me and thank me for the food, the clothes. Then I know it's a good day."

A Trip of a Lifetime - Gerald & Harriet Pebbler

Gerald and Harriette met in algebra class at Coachella Valley Union High School. On their first date, he treated her to a movie and a root beer float. After high school, Harriett moved to Santa Barbara to attend college.

"He called her and said, 'If you don't come home and marry me, I'm going to move to Florida and you will never see me again,'

Harriette called his bluff and told him, "If it's marriage you're looking for, then show me a ring when I come home for Thanksgiving."

Gerald did.

This year, Gerald and Harriet Peebler from Tustin are celebrating 70 years of marriage. Gerald is 93. Harriette is 90. Harriette wanted to put an exclamation point on their seven decades of marriage. A few days after their anniversary, Harriette turned to Gerald with a proposal:

"We've been together 70 years," she told him. "It's time we go on a trip across the States."

Not just any trip, but driving themselves in a pre-owned, 1998 white Lincoln Town Car with 90,000 miles on it, from California to Connecticut and back – using a paper road map to navigate their way through visits with old war buddies, relatives and friends.

Gerald didn't blink. "Let's go."

And they did.

They settled into their old Lincoln Town Car and pulled away — their belongings in the trunk and a huge country's worth of road ahead of them.

As I read about their road trip, I realized that this couple, Gerald and Harriette, were passing down wisdom without even realizing it. Their road trip so parallels their take on life, that it just jumped out at me and said "Take a lesson, Bob! Cuz right now, you're travelling on a rocky road at night with the headlights off."

- See things. Really SEE them and take it all in.

Harold and Harriette lost their first-born child, Chris, 22, in 1969 in Vietnam — two weeks before he was scheduled to return from the war and get married.

Child Booster Seat Study

Half of all booster seats don’t ensure that adult-sized seat belts fit children properly in all vehicles, according to a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Of 83 booster seats evaluated, 41 fell into the “check fit” category, meaning they might not provide adequate seat-belt fit for all children in all vehicles, the study found. Parents with those seats should check that the booster makes the lap belt lie flat across the child’s upper thighs and the shoulder belt fit snugly across the middle of the shoulder. Yesterday, while wearing a chicken costume, Lt. Mike Hallinan of the Irvine Police Department rappeled over 100 feet down the side of the Irvine Civic Center clock tower. He did the feat twice to generate donations for his longer rappel from the Hyatt Regency Long Beach on Oct. 29th to benefit the Special Olympics. Click here to learn more about Lt. Banebow

Bane Alton Drake Beasley was a chosen name because he had been “long-awaited”… and he did not disappoint. Bane was bright and buoyant, with sturdy legs and sweet, almond-colored skin. Bane had deep brown eyes told stories of great mischief, and his laugh …was magical.,

He was charming and brave, quick with a smile and passionate with his sugar kisses. Then one Tuesday in August of 2010, after just 9 months 18 days of life, this sweet young boy was gone. Even to this day doctors are still not 100% sure, what happened to Bane, but they believe that he may have contracted Meningococcal Disease. Bane, who had been long-awaited was immediately missed.

Then, on the day where everyone gathered to say goodbye to Bane, his Mom & Dad pulled back the curtain on a window to see a beautiful rainbow in the sky which they – now forever will call “Banebow”. Tears streaming down their faces for they saw, in that technicolor sky, the legacy of Bane to to bring sunshine into the rain by offering hope to other families who may be hurting in their darkest of days.

Though their hearts ache with the missing of their sweet young prince, they find peace at the end of every “Banebow”.

Because of two heroic and quick-thinking teachers, 12-year-old Kylee Shea is alive today and feeling great. On September 26th, the seventh-grader from Texas became short of breath then collapsed in the hallway of her school. Surrounding students quickly grabbed gym teachers Kristen Goodgion and Brent Reese for help. Check out this amazing video.
